University College Cork is Ireland’s first five star university and is internationally ranked in the top 2% of universities worldwide. Currently, UCC is leading Irish research with the highest research income nationally and works closely with its affiliated off campus research centres including the Cork Cystic Fibrosis Centre, the Clinical Research Facility, and the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre. The Cork Cystic Fibrosis Centre (CCFC) is located in Cork University Hospital which is the largest medical teaching hospital in Ireland.
Prof. Barry Plant, the coordinator of CFMATTERS, is the director of the CCFC. The centre caters for the clinical needs of 25% of the CF population of Ireland, in newly purpose built state of the art facilities, with multi- disciplinary clinical teams dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of persons with CF. Dr Plant is also actively committed to research. He is the current Chair of the Medical and Scientific committee of the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland and in 2012 was a National Chairperson for the European CF Society Scientific meeting. His group focus on novel clinical trials and therapies, the role of the microbiome and the GI tract in disease progression and treatment outcome in CF. Under his directorship, his research group have been awarded ‘The Best Cystic Fibrosis Research Group’ in Ireland for 6 out of the past seven years (including 2014). Professor Eustace directs the HRB Clinical Research Facility at UCC (CRF-C), which is currently supporting the conduct of 3 FP7 funded trials (
Senator,
HIP and
NEMO). He will be actively involved in the design, conduct and analysis of the CFMATTERS clinical trial. The CRF-C staff includes experienced dedicated research nurses, Data Managers, Biostatisticians, Quality Manager, and Trial Monitors. Additional staff, including a project manager, executive assistant and logistics officer will be hired by the CRF-C as necessary to support CFMATTERS. The CRF-C permanent staff will begin preparatory work on the ethics submission as soon as a favourable funding opinion is obtained in order to expedite this process. Professor Shanahan is Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Director of the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre an internationally renowned translational mucosal immunology group, ranked #2 in probiotic research worldwide. He has significant experience on host microbe-interactions and gut health maintenance in a number of disorders. All scientific personnel from this participant site have previously worked together and have a proven published track record. Recently, Dr Grace O’Callaghan has been appointed as the Project Manager and Mary Daly has been appointed as the Nurse Research Manager.
